The german conductor Mario Hartmuth has been recently appointed as 1. Kapellmeister and Debuty Music Director at the Staatsoper Hannover, Germany.

In the 25/26 season he will be leading new productions of Don Giovanni and Die tote Stadt as well as the revivals of Der Rosenkavalier, Le nozze di Figaro and Hansel and Gretel. Furthermore, he will be conducting performances of Lohengrin and Turandot.

Mario will also be leading one of the orchestra’s subscription concerts with Shostakovich‘s Symphony No. 10 and Berg‘s Violin concerto (Soloist: Antje Weithaas).

In Hannover, he already conducted a celebrated production of Pagliacci and performances of Messa da Requiem, Tosca, La Bohème and Rigoletto.

Previously, Mario served as 1.Kapellmeister and Debuty Music Director at Staatstheater Kassel, where he conducted the widely praised new productions of Otello, Don Giovanni, Les contes d‘Hoffmann, Der Freischütz and Cavalleria Rusticana/ Pagliacci. At short notice, he also took over performances of Wozzeck and Götterdämmerung. Further highlights during his time in Kassel include Turandot, Madama Butterfly, La forza del destino. In addition to his appearances in opera, Mario is devoted to symphonic repertoire, regularly conducting concerts with the Staatsorchester Kassel, hailed by both press and audience. Works include Eine Alpensinfonie, Also sprach Zarathustra, Symphonie fantastique and Bartók‘s Concerto for Orchestra.

In 2024, Mario made his acclaimed debut at the Münchener Biennale with the world premiere of DEFEKT and has been seen responsible for the musical direction of Temple of Alternative Histories by Thorleifur Örn Arnarsson, a new piece for all performing arts in the context of DOCUMENTA 15.

Beginning as an assistant to the chief conductor at Staatstheater Meiningen whilst still studying, Mario was trusted with the highly-praised performances of  Der Rosenkavalier, La Traviata, Hansel und Gretel and Don Pasquale. As a result, he was appointed 2.Kapellmeister and assistant to the chief conductor in Meiningen and made his acclaimed Mozart-Da Ponte debut, leading the new production of Così fan tutte. Throughout his time in Meiningen, Mario conducted more then 20 works of the operatic and dance repertoire, including Capriccio, Ariadne auf Naxos, Tosca, Carmen, Die Fledermaus, The firebird and Lucia di Lammermoor.

Mario appeared as a guest conductor at numerous opera houses such as Oper Leipzig, Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz, Theater Würzburg, Landestheater Eisenach, Landestheater Flensburg, Theater Ulm and in concert with MDR Sinfonieorchester, Philharmonie Baden-Baden, Thüringen Philharmonie Gotha as well as the youth orchestras of Baden-Württemberg, Hessen and Saarland. Having served as an assistant to Cornelius Meister and the ORF Vienna for over two years, he helped prepare main works of the 20th and 21st century. Here he appeared as Klangregisseur for Stockhausens‘ Gruppen and as an assistant at the Salzburg festival.

Complementary to his other engagements, Mario is acting as Music Director of the German Paediatricians Orchestra since 2021, an ensemble that organises charity concerts in the major german concert halls in benefit of children aid organisations. Recent performances took place in Tonhalle Düsseldorf, Laiszhalle Hamburg and Rosengarten Mannheim.

Mario studied conducting and the french horn in Weimar with Prof. Nicolás Pasquet and Prof. Gunter Kahlert. He received valuable inspiration by Prof. Mark Stringer during a yearlong stay at University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. His development also included  several masterclasses with Jorma Panula, Marko Letonja, Clark Rundell, Johannes Kalitzke, Pavel Baleff and Roberto Paternostro. He was a scholar to Forum Dirigieren by the german music council, a conducting fellow at the Aspen Music Festival and an awardee of the Deutschlandstipendium by the Ernst-Abbe-foundation Jena.
